Key Features You Should Look Into a Golf GPS Watch

When shopping for the perfect golf GPS watch, there are some essential features you should consider. These include accuracy, battery life, course coverage, and ease of use.

GPS Accuracy

The most crucial aspect of any golf GPS watch is its accuracy. After all, you rely on this device to give you precise yardages and distances when out on the course. Look for models that have been tested and proven to be accurate within a few yards.

Battery Life

An important consideration for any electronic device is battery life, and the same goes for golf GPS watches. You want a watch that can last through an entire round of golf without needing to be charged. Some models can even last for multiple rounds, making them perfect for longer golf trips.

Course Coverage

Not all golf GPS watches offer the same course coverage. Make sure to check if the watch covers the courses you usually play on or plan to visit in the future. Some high-end models have pre-loaded courses from around the world, while others require you to download courses manually.

Ease of Use

Last but not least, make sure the golf GPS watch you choose is user-friendly. You don’t want to spend hours trying to figure out how to navigate through menus and access different features. Look for watches with intuitive interfaces and easy-to-use buttons for a stress-free golfing experience.

HOW WE TESTED

To ensure the accuracy and reliability of our recommendations, we tested several golf GPS watches based on their features, performance, and user reviews. Our testing process involved using the watches in real-life scenarios on multiple golf courses.

We also looked into factors like design, durability, and value for money to provide a comprehensive review of each watch. After thorough testing and research, we have narrowed down the list to the top golf GPS watches currently on the market.

SHOULD YOU BUY IT?

YES IF:

✅ You want a golf GPS watch that doubles as an activity tracker and smartwatch.

✅ You play on different courses and need a device with extensive course coverage.

✅ You appreciate sleek design and user-friendly interfaces.

NO IF:

❌ You prefer watches with physical buttons rather than touchscreen operation.

❌ You don’t need advanced features like swing analysis or automatic scorecards.

❌ You have a limited budget and are looking for a more affordable option.

The watch looks great and I love the amoled display. I thought that was the area where the S40/S42/S60/S62 was lacking. And I know why they were using the MIP display, way more viable in sunlight and saves on battery life, but with Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch displays the Garmin watches just looked dated, especially for regular use outside the golf course.

Policeman5151

I bought the smaller version. I’m not fond of wearing a watch when I play but, with the right band, I don’t even notice this one in the golf swing. R/garminwatch has some comparison pics. I’ve also been following garmin on IG and it shows the watch on a variety of wrist sizes. Some of this comes down to preference and wrist size. I will say, the new approach is incredibly light on the wrist. (The smaller watch size is only like 1mm smaller display than the S62.)

The S70 does a virtual AI caddie as well

I like them so I get data from each club I hit, I have only been playing just over a year. I love the watch for distance and plays like info. They work well for what they are (when they work, lol)

I have them for every club and they are slowly building data, I can see my average for each club etc. I just kind of like to know I guess. As my old man used to say about himself when fishing… I am “All the gear and no idea” kind of person!

SHOULD YOU BUY IT?

YES IF:

✅ You prefer a watch with slope technology and customizable display modes.

✅ Battery life is an essential factor for you, and you want a long-lasting battery.

✅ A fantastic choice for players seeking a smartwatch with a large screen.

NO IF:

❌ You have small wrists or don’t like chunky watches.

❌ You’re not interested in advanced features such as slope adjustment.

Bushnell Ion Elite, 180$, has hole overviews, can track shot distances with a swipe, keep score if wanted, I have found it to be pretty accurate along with rangefinders and other watches. I wanted a basic watch to keep score and give distances and it has been awesome, battery is great as well.

  • It stands out with its slope feature and movable pin, enhancing the accuracy of your game.
  • Despite its advanced features, the Bushnell Ion Elite offers excellent value for money.

SHOULD YOU BUY IT?

YES IF:

✅ You want a stylish smartwatchThe S62 stands out as a truly stylish smartwatch, boasting a premium bezel that adds to its overall appeal.

✅ You want off-course versatility: This watch offers a range of practical fitness and daily life features to help you maintain your well-being and stay organized.

✅ You need a watch to be easy to use: While there are plenty of features crammed into the S62, the user experience is very straightforward.

NO IF:

❌ You want a watch with a bright screen: Course maps weren’t as vibrant as other watches.

The S62 was also included in our 2023’s top picks of Best Golf Watch For Ladies, check out why.

I did not buy the sensors and the S62 watch alone gives me individual club data. When, you swing, the watch asks what club you just hit. So, if you swing a club, the watch prompts you and with one touch I choose driver or 3 wood or some other club. Then on my next swing, it asks me to input that club.

So, on the first hole I swing and indicate it was my driver. My next swing is in the fairway 250 yards away from the first swing. This club might be a 7 iron. Then I indicate I was putting or chipping. It knows then that the 7 iron went 165 yards but I was left of the green and had to chip on.

After five rounds, the intelligent caddie shows me how it think I would score using a driver vs a three wood. It is very cool.

It gives you drive accuracy, approach accuracy, chipping accuracy. Etc.

SpiritualIngenuity

I have the S62 and overall it is pretty good. I use it to track my shots and keep score. There are some issues, however:

Assuming they fix this bug with the club order and unassigned sensors, I am going to stick with the Garmin system, however, when my Arccos free year subscription is up.

Cng2112

I just sold my S62 on ebay today. I noticed that my back of my hand was always pressing the buttons inadvertently. Also it never seemed to work as it should. I was constantly fiddling with it to either catch up to the correct hole or at the end of the round it would show phantom shots or be missing holes on the scorecard. That along with all the things I’d never use got me to switch back to simple easy S20

Dododeo

I’m using the S62. I love it. Its been very accurate for me (I have a range finder as well).

It isn’t great for chipping and putting unless you have sensors. I haven’t read great things about the sensors though so I never grabbed them. I also have no experience with the R10 unfortunately.

Tips would be to include a club in your digital bag for duffs/shanks and a club for punch outs.

You can download the course in advance but I’m not sure if that makes much of a difference. Really cloudy days it can become just a course map and scorecard but I imagine any GPS device has that issue.

ThinPower93

I’m a big fan of Garmin golf watches and have an s62 I wear daily. I’ve had the s60 and the Fitbit looking monochrome screen one as well. I have stats for years. I do have three sensors for putter and 2 wedges. I have a range finder that seldom sees daylight. My regular 4 some all have range finders that they rarely pull, they just ask me for the yards. One even broke down and bought his own s62.

I get bands on Amazon inexpensive, lots of types and colors. I also recommend that they make a plastic cover guard for the watch body – excellent. And they make little plug covers that go in the charger slot to keep dirt and sweat out.

I don’t recommend the screen covers, they don’t seem look right and distract.

I have added and removed clubs as needed love it.

Over time it will start recommending what club to hit based on your accumulated yardages.

It has made me better to learn where I miss my driver, how often my approach shots are short, or off line, and pitch shots.

Tracking my putting has saved my game. I play to a 3.9 this past summer because I was able to track and remove my favorite (sorry Scotty) putter and replace with a ping center shaft that actually made putts. Went from 33 to 29 putts a round. Thx Garmin!

SHOULD YOU BUY IT?

YES IF:

✅ You want a stylish and versatile smartwatch: The Galaxy5 Pro Golf Edition offers all the features of a premium smartwatch, along with specialized golf functionalities.

✅ You are an Android user, as this watch is compatible only with Android devices.

✅ You value detailed information, the golf application on this watch is designed to provide in-depth insights into your game.

NO IF:

❌ You use an iPhone, as this watch is not compatible with iOS devices.

I have the Samsung Galaxy 5 Golf Edition. It comes with SmartCaddie by Golf Buddy. No subscription necessary. It gives you distance to the green and hole illustration. It detects ball strikes now so you don’t have to tap the screen after every shot. If contour maps of greens are available, it will show them. None of the courses I play have the contour maps available, so I don’t see them on the watch. I also got the Arccos sensors when I bought my Ping driver several weeks ago. The sensors do not work with SmartCaddie. The next time out, I think I’m going to run SmartCaddie on my watch and Arccos on my phone to see how they compare. I do not believe you can get distance from your ball to hazards on the watch.

  • The Galaxy5 Pro Golf Edition provides accurate yardages and a seamless score-keeping experience, making it a reliable partner on the course.
  • It includes all the non-golf features of the Samsung Galaxy5 Pro smartwatch, making it a versatile accessory.
  • The golf application is highly detailed, catering to every golfer’s needs for a comprehensive understanding of their game.
  • The major drawback of this watch is its lack of compatibility with the iPhone, which can limit its user base.

✅ You want a reliable and easy-to-use GPS watch with accurate distance information for multiple courses.

✅ A lightweight and sleek design is important to you, as the Garmin Approach S12 weighs only 34g and has a comfortable strap.

✅ Basic features such as front, middle and back yardages, as well as layup areas and hazards, are sufficient for your golf game.

❌ Customization options are important to you, as the watch only comes with three straps in the package.

❌ You want more advanced features and technology, as this is an entry-level GPS watch from Garmin.

My gf got me the s12 for Christmas last year and I use it every round. I paired it with the ct10 sensors so it tracks all of my shots automatically. The GPS distance is almost always the same as my rangefinder +/- 1 yard. Overall I like it, screen can be hard to see in low light conditions, but not really an issue in a normal round. I really like the convenience it brings too. Being able to just look at my wrist, maybe press a couple buttons to change pin location, as opposed to shooting the pin is really nice. Also on blind shots you still have the distance if you can’t see the flag.

cmwow

I got a Garmin S12 at the beginning of summer and have really enjoyed it thus far. The battery life is absolutely outstanding and the screen’s readability in direct sunlight is excellent as well.

❌ You prefer a watch with multiple straps for customization options, the LX5 only comes with one strap in the package.

I own a Skycaddie for seven years now.

Pros: Very accurate, more than my wife’s Garmin, great graphics, every hazard object is mapped and distance to it. Love the Eagle Membership (SkyGolf package), tracks every shot by club and I can use it to gap fit all my irons and know their true distance. When I bought my new irons turns out my PW was off by 7 yards, SkyGolf found that out quickly and I got it fixed. I also have club accuracy, hole by hole accuracy, Fairway hits data, GIR, putts and many many useful things to help you improve your game

Cons: I have to load every course so on holidays you better load all the courses or bring your software to update, wife can use her Garmin anywhere just turns it on. It gets annoying have to pay the subscription fees very very quickly. I pay $99 for three years and I get the full SkyGolf tracker which has a lot of perks, I get to use my phone app instead of the actual LX5 plus they mailed me three boxes of Bridgestone e12s So really, yeah $33 per year but you get a box of balls for that too. Not as bad a deal as they make it out but yeah annoying

❌ You want a more multi-functional watch, the Aim W12 may not be suitable for those looking for additional fitness features beyond step counting.

GolfBuddy AIM W12 works perfect for me.

Pros- battery life, shot distance, hole overview, 2-year warranty, ease of use, built in tutorial, bright screen, dimming mode, no annual or monthly subscriptions

cons- takes maybe 10 seconds at most to turn watch on, charging mechanism can be annoying, although it benefits having a cradle to charge on rather than messing up the charging port in the watch, wristbands are decent

Overall rating- 8/10

  • The GolfBuddy Aim W12 excels in precision, thanks to its slope function that boosts the accuracy of distances.
  • The watch offers a variety of strategy-enhancing features that can help refine your game.
  • Its user-friendly interface makes navigation extremely convenient, letting you focus more on your shots and less on managing the watch.
  • The hole maps on the Aim W12 could use some improvement, as they are not as detailed or accurate as some golfers might prefer.

YES IF:

✅ You want a multi-functional watch that can be used on and off the course.

✅ You want a watch that sets itself apart by including slope gradients, a feature that is rarely seen in other watches.

✅ Battery life is a crucial factor for you, and you don’t want to have to charge your watch frequently.

I have an Apple Watch. Unless things have changed with the recent one (I have the previous model) it wont be better or as good as the T9. And you’d have to pay for monthly or yearly subscription for an app to make it worthwhile for Apple Watch use.

I have the T9. It’s great.
