GolfBuddy Voice X Handheld Golf GPS Review
The GolfBuddy Voice X golf GPS device stands apart from the competition in its ability to read the yardages out aloud. This is very handy for someone who has problems with short vision or cannot read clearly in the sunlight. This feature can also be switched off for a quiet game. It is a clip-on unit which can be put on your hat visors or belt loops. This version of the voice golf GPS device covers all the major yardages and some pretty thoughtful features that make it a complete package for all kinds of players, pros to high-leisure golfers. With the exception of players who rely heavily on stat tracking, swing training and other such advanced features, this is a very compact and easy to use.
Editor's Rating (5/5):
The Voice X golf GPS is modeled on the Voice GPS and Voice+ watch from GolfBuddy. The Voice was pretty basic with just the greens distances where you had to cycle through the screens for center, front and back distances. The Voice+ comes with straps attached, though they can be removed for clipping the device on to your belt or cap. They finally put all the distances on the same screen but the operations are still limited. The Voice 2 has no hazard distances. Voice X is a little faster than the other competition, the GolfBuddy WTX Smart GPS watch. The Voice X GPS beats both the devices and comes at a much more reasonable price.
Features & Benefits Of GolfBuddy Voice X
The GolfBuddy Voice X golf GPS is a clip-on wearable that speaks out the yardages in voice. It has maintained their legacy of simple fail-safe operation. The design and features are reviewed below:
The GolfBuddy Voice X golf GPS is a circular clip-on with a clip at the back. The body is 1.85 inches in diameter. It is 0.54 inches deep. The center of the body is occupied by a 1.28-inch screen. The square screen has one button next to it on the same surface. The other four buttons are along on the edges of the device at diagonal ends of the screen. One is a power/OK button, another a back button and then a pair of up/down buttons. The charging is done through a USB wire with a micro-USB connection.
This golf GPS is water-resistant but not complete waterproof.
The GolfBuddy Voice X golf GPS provides distances to the center, front and back of the greens from your angle of approach. They are all presented together on the screen. The distance to the center is in the bold big numbers. The front and back distances are below it. A small representation of the hole layout shows you the angle of attack. The hole number, par and battery status are on the top line of the screen.
You also get hazard distances, which is a new for the GolfBuddy Voice line. You can also change the Pin location and get the distances to these pins. This is especially useful on the large greens when you need to aim more precisely.
The GolfBuddy Voice X golf GPS is a voice clip-on first. It can speak the yardages to the greens on the hole you are at. You can select between male and female voices. You have the choice between English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. The voice alerts are non-intrusive. They can be switched off though.
The Voice X can connect to your smartphone through Bluetooth. An app on the phone will run an Automatic Course Updater when you walk into a course that needs to be update on the off-chance. The updated distances are uploaded directly to the Voice X device for the newest distance measuring.
- Course Coverage:
The course database of GolfBuddy Voice X is pre-loaded with 38,000 courses worldwide. As we mentioned in the previous feature, the course maps are automatically updated upon recognition of the course.
- Auto Recognition:
Apart from the auto course recognition feature, this GPS unit also has auto-hole recognition. As you move on from one green, the hole number is automatically forwarded. As with the previous GolfBuddy Voice devices, the hole recognition works without any glitches.
- Big Number Mode:
In this mode, the font size of the distances is magnified. The representation of the hole is removed from the screen to make room for the bigger numbers. This is not such a big miss since you wouldn’t have been able to look at the little graphic anyway if you need the Big Number mode.
- Shot distance:
As a standard feature of most GPS devices, the Voice X goes into measurement mode to track the distance you hit with each shot. This is useful to track the club distances and select the clubs for future shots accordingly.
- GPS tracking:
The GolfBuddy Voice X golf GPS also has limited abilities as an activity tracker through its GPS capabilities. It measures time, distance, pace, elevation, routes and records them for future reference.
- Watch mode:
It can also work in the watch mode showing time, sunrise and sunset times.
The battery of this clip-on works through 11 hours of life per charge. It’s substantial for a unit of this size. You can easily get 2-3 rounds out of it.
The GolfBuddy Voice X golf GPS hasn’t been in the market very long, but it has already gained recommendations from the top reviewers. The addition of the most relevant features has garnered the most attention. The distances from the angle of golfers positions, be it from the other fairway or right down the middle, and pin-movement also worked better than we expected. The ease of operation is consistent along the Voice line-up, which users appreciated. The newer, compact form factor and the larger screen also attracted a lot of positive attention.
