The internet is breaking with the news of Pokémon Go, its players, Nintendo’s market share and what not. While the casual players are freaking out over the simple GPS-based augmented reality game, golfers can sit back and laugh off the hype. They have done augmented reality before, with their pride at stake. When we first heard about Pokémon Go, we couldn’t help but draw a few parallels between the delightful game and our experience with Golf GPS.
After all, finding the golf ball is as big a feat as finding a Dragonite. The ease with which golfers navigate the golf course with GPS can make them ace Pokétrainers. Of course, it helps that a golfer is smart as heck due to her or his practice with the game and has an edge anyway. So PokéNoobs move over, the golfers are taking over!
What makes GPS-aided golf and Pokémon so similar?
#1 : The GPS element surely
Golf GPS devices exploit the power of satelites circling around us to locate important distances and spots on the golf course. Distance to center, front and back, layup, doglegs etc. these are like Pokéstop alternatives. This is exactly how people run amok in the city looking for Snorlax or a Pokégym to battle over. Estimating distances and making route choices is a major part of both the games. You might say that GPS is a universal technology and that this is a moot point. But have you actually considered how many people can handle GPS apps dexterously? Most of us can’t get our IQ high enough to pass the SATs. Technology is a whole other domain to conquer.
#2 : Both products are used to search
Then there’s the whole idea of looking for prized possessions. In the case of Pokétrainers, it is stalwarts like Exeggutor or Mewtwo. In case of golfers, it’s a teeny-tiny golf ball. Although golf may seem almost drab in this regard, imagine how frustrated you will feel when the item you are supposed to hit, disappears. Walking to fro the same area looking for something precious is a feeling that has reverberated across the golf community and Pokéworld.
#3 : Sometimes the two worlds collide
You may find that the hottest Pokéstops are in or at the nearest golf courses. So you Pokémaniacs can go over and share your pain and excitement with the fellow-bearers, the golfers. Together, you can curse the GPS, the fatal flaws of the GPS apps and golf GPS device software. You can share happy memories of walking into a wall based on GPS. You can also take tips from each other as to how to conquer the GPS. Of course, if your stubborn Pokémon has been lodging over a hole on the golf course, you can politely ask the golfers’ permission and help to capture it.
#4 : Golfers will immensely enjoy
Golfers will immensely enjoy the Pokémon Go game too, since they have a serious advantage over the novice non-technology-savvy Pokétrainers in using GPS tracking. They can show the newbies some classy maneuvers using the GPS on the Pokémon Go game. For example, when you move and your location on the app doesn’t change, golfers will know all the tricks to get the god-awful things to work, be it vehement shaking or banging the device. Meanwhile noobs will watch the golf prodigies at work.
Both Pokémon Go app and golf GPS devices have the tendency to annoy non-believers. Ever since the inception of golf GPS, veteran golfers have been losing it over how it dumbs down the game. We would like to think of golf GPS as a phase of evolution in the game. Similarly with Pokémon, we have the usual set of cynics. They will criticize the game seven ways to Sunday, but boy do they get excited at the prospect of a possible Articuno sighting! Just like golfers get giddy when their calculations pay off and golf ball curves beautifully into the intended trajectory.
The craze of Pokémon Go has been getting in the way of golfing brethren too. Overzealous Pokétrainers end up walking blindly through a golf course, hoping to catch the latest Pokémon and end up having a golf ball smash their nose. Since they don’t have the astute sense of golfers in distance-guessing, they step right in the firing line. Mind you, golf balls may be rubber, but when they hit you in the gut, they feel like an iron fist. So Pokétrainers, pay attention! Strike up a conversation with your golfing brothers-in-arms and use their experience to somersault into the murky world of Pokémon. While you are at it, get the golfers to play the ingenious game too!
